Question 1: How will you do this?
a) Determine whether a material is magnetic or non-magnetic.
Answer : The materials that stick to a magnet are called magnetic materials, while those that do not stick to a magnet are called non-magnetic materials. The metals iron, cobalt, nickel are magnetic materials.

b) Explain that a magnet has a certain magnetic field.
Answer : Take a drawing cardboard and sprinkle some iron filings on it. Notice the position of the iron filings as a whole. Now, take a bar magnet and slowly bring it below the cardboard. You will observe that the iron filings tend to attract towards the magnet and align themselves as shown.

It represents that the magnet exerts a force around its body with a stronger force near the two poles. Also, this regular pattern of the iron filings on the board represents the lines of magnetic field. Thus, a magnet has a certain magnetic field which can be represented by curved lines around a magnet.

It shows that magnet has a certain magnetic field.

c) Find the north pole of a magnet.
Answer : Take a magnetic compass and place it close to but not touching your magnet. Watch carefully at where the compass needle points. The point that normally points to the north pole of Earth should point to one end of the magnet. That end is actually the South pole of the magnet.

This rationale may seem a little confusing at first, but since Earth’s geographic North pole acts like the south pole to a magnet, the opposite poles attract.

Question 2: Which magnet will you use?
a) Iron is to be separated from trash.
Answer : Electromagnet can be used to separate iron from trash.

b) You are lost in a fores
Answer : Bar magnet or loadstone can be used to find the direction in the forest. This is because a bar magnet, when suspended freely, always rests in north-south direction.

c) A window shutter opens and shuts continuously in the wind.
Answer : Permanent magnet can be used to stop the continuous shuttering of the window in the wind.

a) How is an electromagnet made?
Answer : When an electric current flows in a wire, it creates a magnetic field around the wire. This effect can be used to make an electromagnet. A simple electromagnet comprises a length of wire turned into a coil and connected to a battery or power supply. You can make an electromagnet stronger by doing these things:
  1. wrapping the coil around a piece of iron (such as an iron nail)
  2. adding more turns to the coil 
  3. increasing the current flowing through the coil

b) Write the properties of a magnet.
Answer : Magnets have certain important properties. They are:
  1. Attractive Property – Magnet attracts ferromagnetic materials like iron, cobalt, and nickel. 
  2. Repulsive Properties – Like magnetic poles repel each other and unlike magnetic poles attract each other.
  3. Directive Property – A freely suspended magnet always points in a north-south direction.

c) What are the practical uses of a magnet?
Answer :
  1. Magnets are used to make a tight seal on the doors to refrigerators and freezers. 
  2. They power speakers in stereos, earphones, and televisions. 
  3. Magnets are used to store data in computers, and are important in scanning machines called MRIs (magnetic resonance imagers), which doctors use to look inside people's bodies.
