What is a potentiometer?

A potentiometer is an electrical resistor with a variable resistance value and is usually manually adjustable. Potentiometers use three terminals and are usually used in low-current circuits, for higher-current circuits rheostats are used. In many electrical devices potentiometers set the output level. For example, on a loudspeaker the potentiometer adjusts the volume; on a television or computer monitor can be used to control the brightness.
