Difference between Pectoral and Pelvic Girdle

Differnce between Pectoral and Pelvic Girdle Class 11 :

Pectoral Girdlepelvic Girdle
The Pectoral girdle is a set of 4 bones which connects to the arm on each side. It is a set of 4 bones -1. 2 scapula2. 2 clavicleThe pelvic girdle consists of two bones: sacrum and the coccyx. The pelvic girdle is formed of paired hip bones each made up of ilium, ischium and pubis.
The bones of the pectoral girdle are lighterIt consists of innominate coxal or hip bones
It has no articulation with the vertebral columnIt has an articulation with the vertebral column.
It is also known as shoulder girdle and is found in shoulder on both the sidesIt is found in the lower part of the trunk
The pectoral girdle is part of the appendicular skeleton which are for the upper limbs. In human beings, the pectoral girdle consists of the scapula and the clavicle. The pelvic girdle is located in the lower part of the trunk. It is a ring-like bony structure.
These are responsible for lifting, holding etc. These are responsible for jumping, standing etc.
It is same in both males and femalesWomen majorly have gynaecoid pelvis and males have android pelvis
It is a skeletal support from where the forelimbs of vertebrates are attached. It is a skeletal support form where the hind limbs of vertebrates are attached.
It has more mobility than the pectoral girdle. It has less mobility than the pectoral girdle.

What is Pectoral Girdle?

The shoulder girdle is a set of bones, joints and muscles that provide mobility to the upper body. More specifically, the shoulder girdle is made up of two bones mainly, the clavicle and the scapula. Although the importance of the sternum in it should not be overlooked. It is very necessary to strengthen the muscles that are in this area. They are essential for strengthening the back. Its strengthening will help us with the prevention of problems and pain in it. The bones that therefore make up the shoulder girdle are: The humerus, The scapul, Clavicle. Some of the most common injuries to the shoulder girdle are: Clavicle dislocations, Shoulder dislocation, Elbow dislocation Scapula, clavicle and humerus fractures, Sternoclavicular injury

It is made up of 3 true joints:

1. Glenohumeral or scapulohumeral: joint between the head of the humerus and the glenoid belonging to the scapular bone also called the shoulder blade

2. Clavicular acromion: formed by the outer edge of the clavicle and the acromion that belongs to the spine of the scapula.

3. Sternocostoclavicular: brings the internal end of the clavicle into contact with the sternal manubrium and the first costal cartilage

4. Scapulothoracic: the surfaces are on the one hand the scapula and on the other the thorax, it is not a proper joint since it lacks the necessary characteristics to be one but it is extremely important to give the biomechanical characteristics to the whole set.

The function of the shoulder girdle is

  1. Allow arm mobility in all planes of motion
  2. Orient the hand in all the axes of space.
  3. Give stability to the whole body.
  4. Join the upper extremity to the thorax.
Characteristics of the shoulder girdle
The main characteristics of the shoulder girdle are the following:
  1. The shoulder girdle is made up of the bones of the clavicle and scapula .
  2. The waist extends from the base of the neck to the lower edge of the pectoralis major muscle .
  3. It is divided into three different regions: anterior or axillary , middle or deltoid, and posterior or scapular .
  4. It contains the greatest amount of movement of all the joints of the body.
  5. It is the proximal segment of the upper limb.

Frequently Asked Questions on Difference between Pectoral and Pelvic Girdle :
1. Where is the pelvic girdle Present?
Answer: The pelvic girdle is a ring-like bony structure present in the lower part of the trunk and it connects the axial skeleton to the lower limbs.

2. What is the function of the pelvic girdle?
Answer : The main functions of the pelvic girdle are: Support the weight of the upper body when standing or sitting. Transfer weight from the axial skeleton to the inferior appendicular skeleton when standing or sitting.

3. How many are the bones of the pelvic girdle?
Answer : Bones of the pelvic girdle or hip formed by 3 joined bones. Bones of the lower limb 30 bones in each leg divided into: thigh with 1 bone; leg with 2; tarsus with 8; metatarsal with 5 and phalanges with 14 bones.

4. What is the pectoral girdle?
Answer : The shoulder girdle is a set of bones, joints and muscles that provide mobility to the upper body. More specifically, the shoulder girdle is made up of two bones mainly, the clavicle and the scapula.

5. What is the function of scapula bone?
Answer: The main functions of the scapula are to provide stability to the humerus and to allow movement of the arm and hand in all three planes of space.
